I started the Community Color project in the early days of the Internet. My fear at the time was that the Internet would become by big tech and that big tech was likely to turn malevolent, and that the best way to defend against big tech is to promote locally focused web development.
The project started with a directory, a site rating widget, a calendar and forum. I created the Site of the Day review program so that the site would have an active RSS Feed.
I originally funded the project with affiliate ads. The affiliate market proved too time consuming and was rife with fraud.
My fears that malevolent big tech firms would dominate the net became true. Since I could not fund the site, I removed all of the interactive features of the site and left the directory and site review program.
